The dumpster industry earned its reputation for surprise fees honestly. The headline rate is rarely the problem — what gets added to it is. Here is how the pricing is built and where it goes wrong.
What each size includes
The base rate is quoted per job — it moves with your location, the rental length, and what you are throwing away. What does not move is the tonnage allowance built into every rental:
| Size | Tonnage included | Overage rate |
|---|---|---|
| 10 yard | 3 tons | $75/ton |
| 12 yard | 3 tons | $75/ton |
| 20 yard | 3 tons | $75/ton |
| 30 yard | 5 tons | $75/ton |
| 40 yard | 7 tons | $75/ton |
Call our number for a transparent quote on your job — it takes about five minutes and you get a real number, not a range.
Heavy-material loads (concrete, dirt, shingles) are often quoted differently because they hit weight limits long before they fill the box.
What transparent pricing includes
- Delivery and placement, with boards down on residential drives
- A 7-day rental period
- Pickup and hauling
- Disposal up to the stated tonnage allowance
If disposal is quoted separately from the rental, you are not looking at a transparent price — you are looking at a deposit.
How tonnage overage actually works
Every rental includes a weight allowance. Go over it and you pay a per-ton rate on the excess. That is normal and fair.
What is not normal: not being told the allowance or the per-ton rate until the invoice. Ask both numbers before you book. A company that will not say is counting on you not asking.
Rough weights, so you can estimate:
- Asphalt shingles: about 2.5 tons per 1,000 sq ft of roof (one layer)
- Concrete: about 1.5 tons per cubic yard
- Dirt: about 1.4 tons per cubic yard
- Household clean-out debris: about 0.15 tons per cubic yard
That last number is why a 30 yard of furniture and drywall weighs less than a half-full 10 yard of concrete.
The fees that inflate a cheap quote
Fuel surcharge. A percentage tacked on at invoice. Ask if it exists.
Daily overage. Some companies quote a low rate for 3 days, then charge a daily rate after that. Confirm the included rental period in days.
Trip fee. If the truck arrives and cannot place or retrieve the container — blocked driveway, overloaded box, car in the way — that is a real cost. Avoidable, but ask what it runs.
Contamination fee. Prohibited items in the load. Tires, batteries, paint, solvents, appliances with refrigerant, anything flammable. The landfill charges us separately, so it gets passed through.
Overfill fee. Debris above the rim cannot be legally tarped and hauled. Load level with the top rail.
Three questions before you book
- What is the all-in price, how many days does it cover, and how much tonnage is included?
- What is the per-ton overage rate?
- Are there fuel, environmental, or administrative surcharges?
Three plain answers means a company that expects you to rent again.
Which size saves you money
Going one size up costs far less than a swap-out, which bills the full delivery again. When you are genuinely between sizes on light material, go bigger.
The exception is heavy material, where a bigger box buys you nothing — you hit the weight limit either way. See the dumpster size guide for how to match size to material.
What JOTS charges
We quote one number for a 7-day rental with the tonnage allowance included, and we tell you the per-ton overage rate before you rent rather than after.
If a charge applies to your job, it is on the quote you get on the phone — not added at invoice time. That is the part that actually matters: a disclosed charge you agreed to is a price, and the same charge discovered afterward is the reason this industry has the reputation it does.
Call for a real number the same day.
